What is Sound Bath?
Don’t start running the hot water or grabbing the bubble bath because Sound Bath involves neither.
Sound Bath is a wellness meditation session where a therapist works with various instruments (gongs, Tibetan singing bowls, crystal bowls etc.) to create a variety of unique sounds and vibrations. The ‘bathing’ element refers to immersing your mind and body in harmonious sounds.
If you bring the idea of Sound Bath back to basics, it’s about using sounds to alter your mental and physical state. Many of us already do that by replaying a favourite song to boost our mood or listening to the sound of the sea to relax.
The sound waves created during the session help to rebalance the racing mind and rejuvenate the body, pulling you into a deep meditative state of being.
In our Sound Bath sessions there are yoga mats, blankets and pillows so that you can be comfortable while Saffie (our Sound Bath therapist) guides you through some breathing work to release any tension in your body. After that you can let your mind drift away to the backdrop of the soundscape.
Some people find Sound Bath to be an easier form of meditation as it is a passive exercise. It doesn’t require a lot of discipline or patience to learn how to do it. All you have to do is listen.
Beyond forcing you to slow down and relax, this ancient practice has numerous physical and mental health benefits too. Specific types of sounds, such as low-frequency vibrations and slow-tempo music, can bring about a physiological response in the body, lowering cortisol and releasing endorphins.
The benefits of Sound Bath include:
- Improved sleep
- Reduced tension and anxiety
- Reduced physical pain
- Better body awareness
- Increased sense of well being
- Released tension in muscles
We hold our Sound Bath sessions once a quarter and encourage people dealing with the stress of a cancer diagnosis to join in.
