Hi, my name’s John I’m walking 5,000,000 steps for The Nightingale.

From 15th May 2026 to 21st May 2027 I am going to walk 5,000,000 steps. My plan is to finish this challenge and take my 5,000,000th step while crossing the finish line at The Nightingale Night Hike in 2027.

I have been involved with The Nightingale for over 10 years now as I know the Manager of their Baker Street Charity Shop very well… I’m married to her!

Throughout this time I’ve volunteered in various guises; filling Night Hike goody bags, helping in the charity shop, leafleting, fundraising and now doing the challange of a lifetime.

I have always had an affinity for the work The Nightingale does as I have lost close family and friends to cancer. This challenge is in memory of them and so that people get the support they need, during what I know to be a very difficult time.

After being an active sports enthusiast for most of my life, I suffered some health problems a few years ago that meant my fitness regime changed. I have found that walking (as well as helping to keep my weight down) is great for my physical and mental health.

I absolutely love being outdoors! I’ve always had an interest in doing a physical challenge, like walking coast to coast but I’ve decided to settle on walking 5,000,000 steps in one year.

My aim with this challenge is to get healthier physically while raising awareness and funds for my local community charity.

My 5,000,000 steps will be made of a mixture of long walks with friends and family and also mini challenges. My first being to walk the highest peaks in every London Borough.

Over the next year I’ll share regular updates of my step count, pictures of my walks and I’ll hopefully be joined by friends, family and The Nightingale Team along the way too.
